France launches terrorism investigation after foiled Bank of America attack

French authorities have launched an investigation into the formation of a “terrorist criminal group” following a foiled attack on a Bank of America branch in central Paris.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office announced the probe on April 1, focusing on a group of suspects detained in connection with the attempted attack, Caliber.Az reports via French media. 

Officials have not confirmed any direct links, but there is a possibility the plot may be connected to the group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya, which recently claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on Jewish targets in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Pre-trial detention has been sought for the four primary suspects, including three minors with no prior criminal records and one adult previously convicted of drug trafficking. French authorities have previously reported the detention of five individuals in total, suspected of planning the attack.

The attempted attack occurred on the night of March 28, when a 17-year-old allegedly tried to detonate a homemade explosive near the bank. An accomplice reportedly fled the scene. Two minors arrested over the weekend remain in custody, with their detention extended as the investigation continues.
