France rejects Trump’s Gaza proposal, citing international law

05 February 2025 19:02

France firmly rejected US President Donald Trump's recent remarks suggesting that the United States could take control of Gaza and relocate Palestinians elsewhere, emphasizing that such actions would violate international law and destabilize the region.

French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christophe Lemoine, quoted by Reuters, reaffirmed France’s opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians, per Caliber.Az.

“France reiterates its opposition to any forced displacement of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, which would constitute a serious violation of international law, an attack on the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians, a serious obstacle to the two-state solution, and a major destabilizing factor for our close partners Egypt and Jordan, as well as for the entire region,” Lemoine stated.

He further stressed that Gaza’s future should be determined within the framework of a Palestinian state and should not be controlled by any third country.

Trump, speaking on February 4, proposed that the US could “take control” of Gaza and transform it into a prosperous region, calling it the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported Trump’s vision, arguing that the Gaza Strip must be freed from Hamas, while US Ambassador to the Middle East Steve Whitkoff claimed that resettling Palestinians would provide them with “more hope” for a better future.

The British government has also subtly distanced itself from Trump’s proposal, offering a measured response to his controversial remarks.
