France says Europe could support mine clearance in Strait of Hormuz
European countries have the capabilities to conduct mine clearance operations and help ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin said on April 17.
In an interview with TF1, she said countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, and France could provide resources for demining operations and escort vessels to ensure safe passage through the strategic waterway.
“We have the capacity to provide full ship escort services, meaning without any offensive action, to ensure their safe passage through the strait,” Vautrin said.
On April 17, France and the United Kingdom are set to host a meeting in Paris with around 40 countries to discuss efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the strategically important maritime route.
The Strait of Hormuz is typically used for the transit of around 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows.
