Zelenskyy, Fico discuss EU integration, energy cooperation, peace efforts

19 June 2026 09:40

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he held talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico focused on Ukraine's European Union accession process, bilateral energy cooperation, and ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia.

In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy said the two leaders reviewed the outcomes of the recent G7 summit in Évian and discussed preparations for the next round of intergovernmental consultations between Ukraine and Slovakia, Caliber.Az reports.

"We discussed European integration, mutually beneficial energy cooperation, and the results of the G7 Évian Summit. I spoke about diplomatic efforts for peace. We also discussed the next round of intergovernmental Ukrainian-Slovak consultations," Zelenskyy wrote.

The Ukrainian president also thanked Slovakia for its support of Ukraine's bid to join the European Union, highlighting Bratislava's backing for the opening of the first negotiating cluster in Kyiv's accession talks.

"I am grateful to Slovakia for supporting Ukraine’s EU integration and the opening of the first negotiating cluster. We count on progress in opening the remaining clusters in the nearest future," Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, it was reported that Fico was expected to propose the establishment of a direct communication channel between Russia and Ukraine.
