Hungary’s Tisza seeks full membership in European People’s Party
Hungary’s Tisza party, which secured victory in the country’s parliamentary elections on April 12, is preparing to seek full membership in the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest political group in the European Parliament.
The announcement was made by Hungarian Prime Minister and Tisza leader Péter Magyar upon his arrival in Brussels for the European Union summit, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Magyar said that, alongside the summit of EU heads of state and government, a number of related events would take place, including a meeting of the EPP attended by the prime ministers of 11 European countries as well as leaders of national political parties. The gathering will mark Tisza’s first participation in an EPP meeting.
“Tisza is not yet a member of the European People’s Party; at present, it is only part of the EPP group in the European Parliament. However, we will begin negotiations on Tisza’s accession to the European People’s Party,” Magyar said.
The new Hungarian government affirmed intention to deepen engagement with European Union institutions and strengthen relations with the EPP leadership, headed by German politician Manfred Weber.
By launching membership talks with the EPP, Magyar signaled his commitment to closer cooperation with mainstream European political forces and to further integrating Hungary into key EU political processes.
