Freight train carrying diesel derails near Warsaw
A freight train transporting diesel fuel derailed overnight on February 3 in the southern suburbs of Warsaw, Polish authorities said. The incident occurred near the town of Jarosławia Wola on the Szczecin–Chełm rail route.
Six of the train’s 35 tank cars left the tracks, with several wagons overturning. Emergency services responded with around 60 firefighters and 19 vehicles, alongside police and railway security personnel, Caliber.Az reports per Polish media.
According to preliminary assessments, no fuel leakage has been detected. Emergency crews are continuing to inspect the integrity of the tanks. No injuries were reported.
Polish media outlet RMF24 reported that the derailment may have been caused by a malfunction in the overhead contact network linked to low temperatures. Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański said there were currently no indications of external interference.
“The exact cause will be determined by the State Commission for the Investigation of Transport Accidents,” Szczepański said, adding that representatives of Poland’s security services were also present at the scene.
Unconfirmed reports from other Polish media suggested the fuel cargo may have been destined for Ukraine, though this information has not been officially verified.
Rail traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as recovery and investigation efforts continued.
