French FM says “no question” of easing sanctions on Iran
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France opposes lifting sanctions on Iran while the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, warning that the waterway cannot be used for “blackmail.”
In an interview on Thursday, May 7, with French broadcaster RTL, Barrot said Iran, “or at least the Iranian regime,” is attempting to secure sanctions relief from the United States in exchange for measures linked to Tehran’s nuclear program.
“I myself imposed serious sanctions against Iran,” Barrot said, explaining why he opposes easing restrictions.
The minister stressed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is an urgent international priority.
“However, there can be no question of lifting even the slightest sanction while a strait such as Hormuz remains blocked,” he said.
“In the short term, it is extremely important that the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened again... the strait is a common good of humanity... It cannot be blocked, subjected to tariffs or blackmail,” Barrot added.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and gas exports.
