Media: French leader flags Russia’s actions as key “test of trust” for US next steps
French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Russia’s actions in the ongoing conflict will serve as a critical “test of trust” for the US, highlighting the importance of Washington’s response in determining the future course of sanctions and diplomatic efforts.
“If Russia demonstrates it is not ready for peace, the US must reaffirm its commitment to sanctions. This will be a test of trust for the Americans,” Macron said, Caliber.Az reports via BFMTV.
President Macron urged the US to impose additional sanctions on Russia if Moscow refuses to engage seriously in peace negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters about the second round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Macron underscored that the response from Washington would be a key indicator of its commitment to holding Russia accountable.
The French leader also disclosed that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump two days earlier and noted Trump’s strong interest in achieving diplomatic progress.
“The question now is: what do we do about it? We, as Europeans, are ready,” Macron added, signalling the EU’s readiness to support further measures if needed.
Reaffirming Europe’s collective stance, Macron emphasised, “We continue to believe in the international order, cooperation, open trade, and respect for the rules.”
