French parliament adopts resolution calling for pressure on Georgia

13 May 2026 10:12

The French National Assembly has adopted a resolution on Georgia criticising what it describes as the country’s “authoritarian course” and reaffirming support for its long-term European integration.

The Assembly said the document proposes suspending Georgia’s accession process to the European Union until certain political conditions are met, including the holding of free and fair elections. It also calls for increased support for civil society groups and the introduction of targeted individual sanctions, Caliber.Az reports.

The resolution further alleges that “Georgia is being used as a ‘platform to circumvent international sanctions against Russia,’ and calls on the EU to take this circumvention into account when preparing the next package of sanctions.”

While the measure was adopted by lawmakers in the National Assembly, it is not legally binding. European resolutions adopted under Article 88-4 of the French Constitution serve as political positions rather than enforceable law.

“However, they represent the Assembly’s contribution to shaping France’s position during negotiations in the Council or serve as a means of engaging in direct dialogue with the institutions of the European Union,” the Assembly’s statement said.
