French presidential hopeful calls for NATO exit and talks with Moscow
30 June 2026 10:52
French presidential candidate and founder of the left-wing party Jean-Luc Mélenchon has called for France to withdraw from NATO and begin negotiations with Russia, according to Le Figaro.
“There can be no question of remaining a member of NATO or joining any new military coalitions like those being consolidated by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to address issues in the Asia-Pacific region,” Mélenchon said.
He also stressed the need to engage in talks with Russia that would provide mutual guarantees regarding future developments after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
On May 3, Mélenchon announced his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election during an appearance on TF1.
