FT: Kyrgyzstan plans legal fight against EU sanctions over Russia trade

02 March 2026 17:20

Kyrgyzstan intends to legally contest any European Union restrictions if Brussels imposes sanctions over the alleged re-export of goods to Russia, Financial Times reports.

According to the publication, the European Commission has proposed banning shipments of certain items to Kyrgyzstan that could have military applications. EU documents cite so-called dual-use products — machinery and electronics used in the production of weapons and drones — which Brussels believes may be subsequently re-exported to Russia in violation of sanctions.

First Deputy Prime Minister Daniyar Amangeldiev told Financial Times that Kyrgyzstan is making every effort to comply with Western restrictions. He noted that the EU has not specified the measures Bishkek should take to demonstrate compliance and prevent punitive actions.

“This decision will have consequences for our image. If such a decision is made, we will be ready to challenge it in court,” Amangeldiev said.

He added that Kyrgyzstan has evidence of the steps taken, but the European side “has not proposed adequate mechanisms to meet the requirements.”

While acknowledging isolated cases of goods transiting to Russia, Amangeldiev emphasised that authorities are working to stop such practices. He noted that much of the rise in European imports is linked to major contracts, including hydroelectric projects.

If implemented, these measures could mark the first direct EU trade restrictions against Kyrgyzstan amid concerns over sanctions evasion.
