Fuel tanker explosion claims ten lives in South Africa
A gas-carrying vehicle explosion killed at least ten people and injured about 50 others in South Africa near a hospital east of Johannesburg on December 24.
As the BBC reported, a truck transporting liquified petroleum gas (LPG) drove under a subway bridge in Boksburg as the driver did not calculate the height of the vehicle correctly, leading to it getting stuck in there. Due to friction, the tanker caught alight which led to the explosion. The explosion also damaged several residential buildings and a hospital, where part of the roof collapsed. A second explosion also damaged a firefighter's car and two passing vehicles.
There are fears the death toll could rise, as 19 people are in critical condition and 15 others are stable but seriously hurt.
