Gas explosion injures eight at Barcelona metro station PHOTO

Eight workers were injured following a gas explosion and subsequent fire at a Barcelona metro station undergoing renovation, local authorities said.

The incident occurred at Plaça de Sants metro station on the city’s L5 line during upgrade works, according to a report by El País.

Preliminary findings indicate that at around 14:40 on July 22, construction workers accidentally damaged a gas pipeline, causing a leak. At approximately 22:50, an explosion occurred while efforts were underway to repair the damage.

All those injured were workers at the site. Two are reported to be in serious condition. Two others sustained moderate injuries and were taken to Vall d’Hebron Hospital, while the remaining four, suffering light to moderate injuries, were admitted to Hospital Clínic.

The explosion triggered a significant fire, which firefighters were able to bring under control. Emergency response efforts were hampered by the continued flow of gas until the affected section of the pipeline was fully shut off.
