Georgia announces international tender for Batumi–Sarpi highway construction
On November 6, 2025, Georgia announced an international tender for the construction of the Batumi–Sarpi highway, which will connect the country to the border with Türkiye.
According to the Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia, cited by Georgian media, the project involves the construction of an 11.3 km two-lane road, a 7.6 km tunnel, and three bridges, including a 1.47 km-long viaduct and a 500-meter bank protection structure.
The project also plans for high-speed interchanges connecting the highway to Batumi Airport, the customs zone, resorts, and settlements along the Black Sea coast.
Construction is expected to take 48 months, and companies interested in participating in the tender must submit their proposals by 16:00 on December 22, 2025.
The Batumi–Sarpi road represents a key section of the East–West Expressway. It will link to the Batumi bypass highway and serve as a direct connection to Georgia’s border with Türkiye.
The construction will be financed by the Asian Development Bank under a $306.6 million loan agreement signed on October 6, 2025. The project is strategically important for regional integration and trade, as it will significantly reduce travel times and improve road safety standards.
The Batumi–Sarpi highway forms part of the larger East–West Motorway, also known as the E-60 European Transit Road. This corridor, the second-largest European transit route, stretches from Brest, France, to Irkeshtam, Kyrgyzstan. Within Georgia, the E-60 runs from the border with Azerbaijan to the Black Sea coast, covering a total of 392 kilometres.
