Georgia launches investigation into alleged foreign interference
The General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has launched an investigation following a statement from representatives of the public movement "Unified Neutral Georgia," as confirmed in an official press release.
The investigation concerns alleged sabotage and violations of Georgia’s state interests, specifically linked to assisting foreign organizations and entities under foreign control engaged in hostile activities, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The inquiry, which commenced on February 8, is being conducted by the investigative unit of the General Prosecutor’s Office. It focuses on alleged sabotage and actions deemed to threaten Georgia’s constitutional order and security. The case is being investigated under Article 318, Part 1, Article 319, and Article 318, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carry prison sentences ranging from five to ten years and seven to fifteen years, respectively.
The investigation was initiated after "Unified Neutral Georgia" submitted a statement highlighting concerns over the alleged coordination of activities by both domestic and foreign actors. The group claims that these activities constitute a direct threat to Georgia’s national security and stability.
To ensure a comprehensive and objective investigation, the case is being handled in collaboration with the State Security Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Authorities have pledged to provide periodic updates on the progress of the investigation and any legal assessments.
In a separate statement, the founders of "Unified Neutral Georgia" called for an investigation into what they claim is the operation of a foreign spy network within the country. They allege that a coordinated campaign has been targeting Georgia for years, involving both external actors and individuals within the opposition who serve foreign interests.
The group asserts that this network operates outside Georgia, following pre-established plans to aid foreign countries and organizations in efforts to undermine national interests. As an example, they cited a previous investigation which reportedly uncovered materials intended for violent actions at various political party offices.
Authorities have yet to provide further details on the investigation, but officials emphasize their commitment to safeguarding Georgia’s national security and sovereignty.
