Lithuania seeks compensation for damage to embassy in Kyiv

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has said he believes there are, at least in theory, legal avenues to seek compensation for damage caused to Lithuania's embassy in Kyiv by Russian strikes.

Budrys noted that the full extent of the damage has yet to be assessed by experts, Caliber.Az reports via Lithuanian media.

“All of this will have to be evaluated. I would like to point out that Lithuania has been actively advocating for the creation of international legal mechanisms that would make it possible to assess, document and recover compensation for damage caused on the territory of Ukraine. A Register of Damage has already been established, and a Claims Commission has now been created, which the Republic of Lithuania was among the first to join. Such theoretical possibilities exist. There is an opportunity to seek compensation for damaged property,” Budrys told journalists.

“How exactly this will work in the case of diplomatic property still requires careful legal examination. However, the principle is quite clear: whether it is a broken window, a damaged roof or any other property, nothing should go unrecorded. Compensation must ultimately be recovered for all of this damage,” he added.

During Russia's missile attack on the night of August 1, the Lithuanian Embassy in Kyiv sustained damage. Following missile impacts near the embassy, a window in the building was shattered, and the solar panels installed on the premises were also damaged.

In response to the large-scale attack by Russian armed forces on Kyiv, Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Russian Embassy in Vilnius and lodged a strong protest.
