Georgian lawmaker accuses German envoy of violating Vienna Convention

26 November 2025 17:19

Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Rati Ionatamishvili has accused German Ambassador Peter Fischer of "violating the Vienna Convention" and "attempting to influence political processes" in Georgia.

Ionatamishvili claimed that Fischer had tried to influence internal political and judicial matters, including appearing in front of posters he said contained calls for violence and hatred. He suggested that if the ambassador acknowledged past violations and committed to refraining from such actions in the future, it could help prevent further damage to his reputation, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

However, Ionatamishvili warned that continued involvement in Georgia’s domestic affairs could harm the ambassador’s standing.

Fischer, for his part, rejected the allegations, stating that he had not interfered in Georgia’s internal affairs and had not violated international norms.

Ionatamishvili also criticised what he described as the ambassador’s regular comments on political processes, support for opposition forces, and statements made during elections, asserting that such activities constituted interference in the country’s domestic affairs.
