Georgian PM celebrates Novruz with Azerbaijanis, reflects on centuries of friendship
In the heart of Marneuli, a city that is about 80 per cent ethnic Azerbaijani, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze celebrated the Novruz holiday, emphasizing the centuries-old bond of friendship and peaceful coexistence between Georgians and Azerbaijanis.
The prime minister expressed deep pride in this longstanding tradition during his speech, highlighting the harmony between Christians and Muslims that has defined the region for generations, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
"I am happy and proud to celebrate this day together with you. Novruz Bayram is a holiday of renewal and goodness. We are proud of centuries-old coexistence, friendship that binds us, Christians and Muslims, Georgians and Azerbaijanis," Kobakhidze said, reflecting on the enduring ties that unite the two nations.
The prime minister added that the shared history of Georgia and Azerbaijan has shaped a future of collaboration, which must be passed on to future generations. "The future of our common country was created together for many years. This history continues today, and it is a beautiful tradition, which we should pass on to our children and future generations."
In his remarks, Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili underscored the mutual respect between the two nations, which he believes will only grow stronger over time. "I am glad that we live in a country where traditions, diversity, and holidays have greater significance and everyone rejoices in them. For centuries, we have walked together, and this mutual respect between our peoples will become even more remarkable," Kavelashvili said. "I congratulate each and every one of you on this holiday and I promise that I will stand by each and every one of you to strengthen our country."
Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, also attending the celebrations, noted the importance of Novruz in uniting people from different faiths and backgrounds. "I congratulate every citizen of our multinational state. Novruz Bayram holiday is of great importance for our society not only because of its cultural traditions but also because this day unites representatives of different religions and nations," he said, emphasizing the unifying spirit of the occasion.
