German chancellor impersonates Trump ahead of Washington visit Video

28 February 2026 12:24

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gave a playful imitation of US President Donald Trump during his speech at the Christian Democratic Party convention in Hesse, highlighting his upcoming visit to the White House.

Merz recounted a telephone conversation with the American president, in which he reported on changes in migration policy. The German chancellor said that the number of asylum applications had fallen by 60 per cent, but Trump did not believe him, Caliber.Az reports via Clash Report on Telegram

Merz then recounted the dialogue, parodying the U.S. president's communication style.

“‘What did you say? 60 per cent? I don't believe it!’” said Merz, prompting a storm of applause and laughter in the hall.

He added that he would show the US president the graphics during their meeting at the White House on March 2.

Earlier reports from German media confirmed that Merz will travel to Washington next week at the invitation of the US president for talks, marking his third visit to the White House.

A key point of tension between the European Union and the United States has been Trump’s tariff policies, as well as uncertainty following a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court struck down the president’s use of emergency powers legislation as the legal basis for tariffs imposed on nearly all U.S. trading partners.
