German Chancellor Scholz sets sights on re-election
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reiterated his intention to seek re-election as prime minister, even amid low approval ratings.
Scholz, reflecting on his tenure since being elected in 2021, noted that Germany faced significant challenges then as it does now, Caliber.Az reports citing a German newspaper.
“I enjoy being chancellor. My objective is for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to strengthen its position and lead the next government,” he stated.
He acknowledged that the German political environment is constantly evolving but expressed confidence in the SPD’s potential for success in the future. The next Bundestag election is scheduled for 2025, during which a new government and chancellor will be chosen. Scholz has previously declared his intent to run again as the SPD candidate. He currently leads a coalition government comprising the SPD, the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party, with the SPD polling at 14-16%.
