Germany contemplates acquisition of nuclear weapons
The German government is reportedly contemplating the acquisition of its own nuclear weapons.
This consideration comes amidst rising concerns about the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House.
According to Kommersant, two primary scenarios are currently under consideration. The first involves signing security guarantees with Britain and France, while the second entails purchasing approximately one thousand nuclear warheads from the United States, thereby establishing Germany as a nuclear power. However, experts view the former option as more viable and realistic.
German politicians and public opinion leaders have been vocal in their insistence that Germany must ensure its security without being reliant on the United States. This sentiment underscores a growing desire for strategic autonomy in German defence policy.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, however, has dismissed the notion, labelling the discussions as futile. Despite the debate surrounding the issue, Scholz's stance indicates that the German government may not be ready to pursue such a drastic shift in defence strategy at this time.
