EU urges UNSC to ramp up pressure on Russia to end Ukraine war
The European Union has urged the United Nations Security Council members to apply maximum pressure on Russia to compel Moscow to end the war in Ukraine, according to Daniel Beck, Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to the UN.
“We call on the Security Council to exert maximum pressure for a ceasefire. It would create space for meaningful talks aimed at ending Russia’s war of aggression and achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law,” Beck stated.
During the Security Council meeting, he highlighted that Ukrainians continue to pay the highest price almost daily due to Russia’s unprovoked and illegal aggression.
Beck also reminded Russia that deliberate attacks on civilians or civilian infrastructure, and causing disproportionate harm to the civilian population, amount to war crimes.
The EU diplomat condemned third countries and organisations that provide support to Russia, enabling Moscow to prolong the conflict.
“We urge all countries to immediately cease any direct or indirect assistance to Russia in its war of aggression,” Beck added.
He reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
“The EU will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Beck concluded.
Separately, in late July, Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced that the EU had begun working on its 19th sanctions package against Russia, shortly after EU member states’ ambassadors agreed on the 18th package.
“We will not settle for halfway measures. Every new package strengthens our message: Ukraine is not alone, and Russia will not go unpunished,” Tsahkna declared.
