Germany eyes to return Afghan refugees through Uzbekistan Article by Bloomberg

16 June 2024 18:19

Germany is in talks with Uzbekistan over a migration pact that could include the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers so that Berlin does not have to make any direct deals with the Taliban.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has vowed a tougher stance on migration, including the deportation of criminal asylum seekers to Afghanistan and Syria, Caliber.Az reports citing Bloomberg.

The push follows a recent series of violent attacks and the rise of the populist far-right in Germany.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, a senior member of Scholz's center-left party, sent officials to Tashkent in late May to negotiate a pact on migration and deportations.

According to the proposed plan, the Uzbek government would receive a few Afghans who were deported from Germany and then send them to neighbouring Afghanistan through a private airline making flights to Kabul.

The Uzbek government is considering the idea and wants any migration pact to include bilateral rules that would allow the skilled workers to legally migrate from Uzbekistan to Germany.
