Germany pledges €300 million in aid for Syria, refugees

17 March 2025 16:10

Ahead of the EU-led donor conference in Brussels, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced a further €300 million ($326 million) in humanitarian aid for Syrians.

The funds, provided through the United Nations and select organizations, are part of Germany's continued commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis in Syria and the surrounding region, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

More than half of the aid will be directed to those within Syria, where it will be distributed without involvement from the country’s transitional government. The funding is earmarked to support vital services, including food assistance, health services, emergency shelters, and protective measures for the most vulnerable populations.

In addition to providing aid within Syria, Baerbock confirmed that Syrian refugees and host communities in neighboring countries—Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Türkiye—will also benefit from the support. She emphasized the importance of an inclusive political process to ensure a peaceful future for Syria, stating, "As Europeans, we stand together for the people of Syria, for a free and peaceful Syria."

Baerbock also called on the transitional government to investigate the recent killings of hundreds of civilians in Alawite villages during violent clashes in Syria’s coastal region earlier this month.

"The transitional government must hold those responsible for these acts accountable," she said. According to a war monitoring group, more than 1,000 people have been killed in the violence, which has seen fighting between loyalists of deposed President Bashar al-Assad and the country’s new Islamist rulers.
