Germany’s far-right AfD party calls for immediate lifting of sanctions on Russia Pushes for Nord Stream Repair

03 February 2025 20:20

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has included in its election manifesto a call for the immediate removal of economic sanctions against Russia. In particular, the repair of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, and closer economic cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

The party's programme outlines its opposition to the deployment of long-range US missiles in Germany, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

"Russia has been a reliable supplier and guarantor of affordable energy for decades, which is the Achilles’ heel of the German economy due to our energy-intensive industries. Restoring unrestricted trade with Russia requires the immediate lifting of economic sanctions and the restoration of the Nord Stream pipelines. Germany’s relations with the Eurasian Economic Union should be expanded," the programme states.

AfD has also proposed recognizing Ukraine as a neutral state outside NATO and the EU.

"We see Ukraine’s future as a neutral state outside NATO and the EU," the manifesto reads.

Additionally, the party has strongly opposed the planned deployment of long-range US missile systems on German territory.

"We reject the planned deployment of American long-range weapon systems (cruise missiles, drones, and rockets) in Germany," the document emphasizes.

At the same time, the party has expressed a desire to improve Germany’s relations with the United States.

"We also consider the new US government a reliable partner in our commitment to freedom of expression and the fight against internet censorship," the programme states.

However, the party has acknowledged growing differences between the geopolitical and economic interests of the United States and those of Germany and other European nations.

"One example of this is energy supply, such as the large-scale US attempt to prevent the commissioning of the Nord Stream pipeline. Germany must not allow itself to be drawn into conflicts arising from US decisions regarding other powers," the document concludes.
