Google’s Gemini chatbot nears ChatGPT in user base

07 February 2026 08:56

Google’s Gemini chatbot has surpassed 750 million monthly active users (MAU), closing in on OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which currently boasts 810 million users, according to data from Google’s fourth-quarter 2025 report.

In the previous quarter, Gemini reported 650 million MAU, highlighting rapid growth in the competitive AI chatbot market. By comparison, Meta AI’s chatbot currently has 500 million MAU< Forklog notes.

The surge in users comes shortly after the launch of Gemini 3, a leading AI model that performed well in tests. Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted that integrating the neural network has positively influenced growth, while ongoing investments are helping maintain the momentum.

In September, the company introduced an affordable Google AI Plus plan in over 40 countries—including Ukraine, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Egypt—aimed at attracting less affluent users and accelerating adoption.

Gemini’s expansion has contributed to Alphabet’s record performance, with annual revenue exceeding $400 billion for the first time. The company plans to continue aggressive AI investments, allocating $175–185 billion in capital expenditures (CAPEX) for 2026—more than double last year’s spending.

Despite the optimism, Wall Street remains cautious. HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery recently warned that AI company revenues may not justify rising computing costs. Sundar Pichai echoed the concern, acknowledging signs of “irrationality” in the current AI boom and cautioning that no firm is immune to a potential market downturn.
