Greek MEP criticises EU's Borrell over endorsement of potential strikes on Russia
Greek MEP Kostas Papadakis has criticised the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, for allegedly endorsing potential strikes on Russian territory.
"Borrell has called for the full-scale use of Western weapons against Russia and for the removal of all related restrictions,” Papadakis said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
According to Papadakis, previously, Borrell welcomed the Ukrainian army's incursion into Russia's Kursk region and urged EU member states to expedite the delivery of Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine.
“At the same time, EU funding programmes continue to provide military support to Ukraine,” Papadakis noted.
He believes this development is a troubling signal of significant escalation and expansion of the conflict.
In this context, Papadakis is asking Borrell to address his question about the EU’s backing of Ukraine. "Are the EU and national governments, despite the significant risk of escalating the war and the serious repercussions this might have for other countries, intending to continue issuing licences for military systems to be supplied to President Zelenskyy’s administration, potentially leading to further escalation?" inquired the MEP.
Additionally, Papadakis described support for Ukraine as an “intolerable burden” for the citizens of EU member states, citing reductions in social spending and rising energy prices in the eurozone countries.
