Grossi says IAEA to inspect Polish nuclear power plants for civilian use compliance
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will carry out inspections at Poland’s nuclear power plants once they become operational, to ensure that nuclear materials are used solely for peaceful purposes, as confirmed by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
“When Poland builds a nuclear power plant, our inspectors will of course come here and check whether nuclear material is being used for any purpose other than civilian,” Grossi said in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, as per Caliber.Az.
The IAEA regularly conducts inspections, equipment monitoring, environmental sampling, and satellite imaging in countries that are parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and do not possess nuclear weapons.
Should any such country fail to comply with IAEA regulations, the agency may report the violation to the UN Security Council, potentially triggering international sanctions.
Under Poland’s national nuclear energy development programme, the country plans to build two nuclear power plants. The first will be located in the village of Lubiatowo-Kopalino in the northern Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Preparatory work is set to begin this year, with construction scheduled to start in 2028. The plant is expected to produce its first electricity in 2036, with full completion planned for 2038.
