Hamas signals willingness to compromise on disarmament issue

29 July 2026 11:37

Hamas is ready to present a new compromise wording regarding the issue of weapons held by Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip. The updated version of the document may include the term “infrastructure,” which the movement had previously opposed using.

The details and the exact definition of the term are expected to be agreed upon with mediators during upcoming talks in Cairo, according to Caliber.Az, citing Asharq Al-Awsat.

Earlier, reports indicated that a Hamas delegation was heading to Egypt with the intention of finalising negotiations with the Israeli side on the second phase of the plan to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip.

An informed Egyptian source revealed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the meetings in the Egyptian capital are expected to focus on three key issues: the deployment of a technocratic committee and stabilisation forces in the Gaza Strip, taking into account Israel’s previously granted approval; the status of weapons held by Palestinian factions; and the outcome of the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the sources, the inclusion of the term “infrastructure” in the agreement would mean that discussions could go beyond the removal of personal firearms and address the transfer of control over or dismantling of Hamas’ logistical and engineering infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
