Heatwave claims lives of thousands in Spain

More than 5,000 people have died in Spain as a result of extreme heat this summer, according to the country’s daily mortality monitoring system.
The number of deaths linked to exceptionally high temperatures has reached 5,232, the highest figure recorded in the country, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
In August alone, 2,147 people died amid the extreme heat, the data showed.
The current figures are significantly higher than in previous years. Spain recorded 4,789 heat-related deaths in 2022 and 3,035 in 2023.
Older people have been the main group affected by the extreme temperatures.
