Helicopter emergency landing on Kamchatka Volcano claims pilot’s life

08 August 2025 13:05

A tragic incident unfolded on the Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka, when the pilot of a Robinson helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing, resulting in the pilot’s death. Fortunately, all members of the tourist group aboard the aircraft escaped without injury.

The Eastern Interregional Transport Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation confirmed the fatality, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“We have this information, indeed, the pilot died. According to our information, everyone else is safe, although the exact number of passengers is still being verified.”

The emergency landing occurred against the backdrop of renewed volcanic activity at Krasheninnikov, which erupted in early August after nearly six centuries of dormancy. The volcano has since been assigned an orange aviation hazard code, indicating significant danger to low-flying aircraft due to ash emissions and potential reduced visibility.

A volcano in far eastern Russia has erupted for the first time in more than 500 years, which experts say may be linked to last week's massive earthquake.

It has been designated with an orange aviation alert level, indicating that its volcanic activity poses a significant hazard to low-altitude aircraft due to the emission of volcanic ash.
