Helsinki enacts precautionary maritime restrictions in Gulf of Finland
Finland temporarily closed off shipping lanes and airspace in the eastern Gulf of Finland early Saturday morning following a wave of Ukrainian drone strikes directed at neighbouring Russian territory.
The Finnish Defence Forces confirmed that the emergency containment measures were enacted in response to regional spillover risks stemming from "Ukraine's military operations against Russia." The sudden closures halted maritime traffic in one of the Baltic Sea's busiest commercial corridors.
Military officials subsequently confirmed that normal transit operations had resumed later in the morning once regional risks subsided, stating:
"The maritime restrictions were lifted at 09:00. Airspace was also restricted at the same time—the measure began at 05:45 and concluded at 09:00. Not a single drone flew into Finnish territory. The restrictions were precautionary in nature, aiming to ensure conditions for the work of authorities and the safety of the civilian population."
