Hungary’s Magyar to meet Italian counterpart ahead of inauguration weekend
Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Péter Magyar, arrived in Rome for talks at Palazzo Chigi, where he is scheduled to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
As Magyar has not yet officially assumed office — he is set to take over on May 9 — he was welcomed outside the Palazzo by a senior adviser to the Italian premier rather than by Meloni herself, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Guardian.
Experts say this will mark a major political shift in Hungary.
The 45-year-old lawyer and leader of the Tisza Party secured victory in the April 12 parliamentary election, defeating incumbent Viktor Orbán, who made history as the country's longest-serving prime minister with a cumulative 20 years as head of the government.
Magyar's win is set to reshape Hungary’s political landscape, as his party is expected to command a supermajority in parliament, holding 141 of the 199 seats.
