India temporarily allows kerosene distribution amid energy risks
The Indian government has temporarily authorised the distribution of kerosene for household use in several states and union territories amid the Middle East crisis and risks of energy supply disruptions.
According to The Gazette of India, state-owned oil companies are permitted to store up to 5,000 litres of kerosene at selected petrol stations and distribute it to the public for cooking and lighting. The measure will remain in effect for 60 days or until further notice.
It covers 21 regions, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
India had largely phased out kerosene by shifting households to liquefied gas. However, the country remains dependent on oil and LNG imports. Authorities say supplies are stable, though media report local shortages and panic buying.
