Indian FM's explanation as to why President Zelenskyy not invited to G20 summit
Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar has issued a clarification on why the Ukrainian President has not been invited to the upcoming G20 Summit to be held in New Delhi.
As reported by Kommersant, the Indian minister highlighted, that the bloc does not discuss global security issues, as does the UN Security Council, but rather focuses on economic problems.
"Zelenskyy was not invited to the summit because the G20 is a group about global growth and development. This is a summit to discuss energy, fertilizer and food supply. This is the G20, not the UN Security Council. The group of 20 does not deal with global security issues. That is why we made this decision", the minister stated during a briefing in New Delhi.
When asked about the possible participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the summit, to be held from September 9-10, the Indian Foreign Minister merely said that "all G20 members are invited".
During the briefing, Jaishankar also stated that he was "optimistic" about the possibility of resolving the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict through a peaceful settlement. In his view, the window for negotiations is open, including the extension of the Black Sea Grain Deal.
The Kremlin had announced earlier, that President Putin has not yet decided whether he would take part in the summit in person or via video link. The US and several other countries oppose his participation. In addition to the leaders of the G20 countries, representatives of Bangladesh, Algeria, Egypt, Spain, the Netherlands, Oman and Singapore are also invited to this year's summit.
Only a few days ago, the Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting of the economic bloc gathered in Calcutta on August 12 yet failed to agree on a joint statement regarding the Ukraine crisis.
