Hungary backs bid to nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Hungary has joined a US-Israeli initiative to nominate US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, László Kövér.
Speaking to the state news agency MTI, Kövér said he had supported colleagues from the US House of Representatives and Israel’s Knesset, who have launched a signature-gathering campaign for a joint letter to the Nobel Committee.
The document describes the move as unprecedented, stating that, for the first time in modern history, speakers of parliaments from different countries are nominating “an outstanding leader” — Donald J. Trump, the 45th and 47th president of the United States — for what it calls his commitment to peace.
According to the authors of the letter, Trump’s “exceptional statesmanship and extraordinary courage”, as well as his “clear vision, creativity and determination”, have contributed to the resolution or easing of armed conflicts in several regions.
Among the examples cited are tensions between India and Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Azerbaijan and Armenia, Serbia and Kosovo, as well as Egypt and Ethiopia. The letter also highlights the Abraham Accords and a proposed peace plan for the Gaza Strip.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals or organisations deemed to have made the most significant contribution to peace. Nominations can be submitted by a wide range of political and academic figures, including members of national parliaments.
