Indian ships blocked in Strait of Hormuz amid Middle East tensions
At least 38 Indian-flagged vessels, mostly carrying oil and liquefied natural gas, are currently stuck in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The situation was confirmed by Sarbananda Sonowal, India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, The Times of India reports.
Around 1,100 Indian seafarers are on board the vessels, and the government has made their safety a top priority. Minister Sonowal said that no ships have been detained or inspected so far, though at least five tankers have sustained damage since the regional escalation began.
India had previously increased its oil imports from Gulf countries, but the recent US and Israeli military operations against Iran have raised concerns over the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, India is considering boosting oil purchases from Russia, even though domestic fuel reserves remain adequate.
On the previous day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with the Emir of Qatar, the Crown Prince of Kuwait, and the Sultan of Oman to explore ways to restore peace and stability in the region.
