Iran downplays significance of US presidential election results Says policies will remain unchanged
Iran has played down the implications of the US presidential election results, stating that it “does not matter” who becomes the next President of the United States.
Speaking to reporters in Tehran on November 6, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani emphasised that the "general policies" of the two nations would remain unchanged regardless of the election outcome, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
Republican candidate Donald Trump, who previously served as US president from 2017 to 2021, claimed victory in the November 5 election after projections indicated he had defeated Democrat Kamala Harris.
However, Mohajerani insisted that it would make little difference whether Trump or Harris assumed office, stressing that Iran had already made "necessary predictions and plans" to manage the future.
“There will be no change in people's livelihoods, and it doesn’t really matter who becomes president in the US,” she added.
Trump's previous tenure was marked by a highly antagonistic approach towards Iran, including his unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018.
Thus, tensions between the two countries reached a peak in January 2020 with the assassination of Iran's top military commander, General Qassem Soleimani, an event that brought the US and Iran to the brink of direct military conflict.
With speculation rising that Trump’s return to the White House could further strain relations, particularly in light of the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, there are concerns that his presidency could derail efforts to revive the nuclear deal.
