Iran proposes formation of BRICS security commission at Russian summit

Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council proposed the creation of a "BRICS Security Commission" at the BRICS summit in Saint Petersburg on September 11.

He stated that BRICS, with its vast population, size, economy, and influence, could play a pivotal role in crafting a new international security order, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

Addressing the 14th Meeting of BRICS High-Ranking Security Officials and National Security Advisors, Ahmadian suggested this specialised security body for BRICS, emphasising its potential to shape a new global security structure.

Ahmadian's proposal aims to address shared threats, including terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, misuse of emerging technologies such as AI and satellites, human trafficking, illicit biological activities, and cyber threats.

He also stressed the importance of BRICS leading global security initiatives alongside economic cooperation.

Notably, BRICS is an acronym for an association of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The group was originally known as BRIC until South Africa joined in 2010, expanding the acronym.

Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates joined the organisation on January 1, 2024. Saudi Arabia is yet to officially join but participates in the organisation's activities as an invited nation

Established in 2009, BRICS was created to foster collaboration among these countries in various fields such as economic development, political dialogue, and cultural exchange.

The organisation aims to enhance the global influence of its member states and provide a platform for coordination on international economic and political issues. The primary goal of BRICS is to promote peace, security, and development across the member states and in the broader global context.
