Armenia’s Prosecutor General seeks to lift MP’s immunity Over Alleged Coup Plot

07 July 2025 16:41

Armenia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has requested that parliament strip MP Artur Sargsyan of his immunity, accusing him of involvement in a plot to overthrow the government by aiding the revanchist movement “Sacred Struggle.”

Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan, presenting the petition on July 7, claimed that Sargsyan, along with Vazgen (Bagrat) Galstyan and others, conspired to seize power between July 2024 and March 2025. He is alleged to have helped recruit groups to storm government buildings as part of the plan, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

The prosecution described the plot as credible, citing prolonged discussions reportedly confirmed by audio recordings. Vardapetyan noted that none of the detained individuals have contested the authenticity of the recordings, although a forensic analysis is still underway.

Searches also uncovered handwritten notes and documents that investigators say outlined efforts to paralyze transport networks, electricity, and internet access as part of a broader campaign to intimidate the public.

On the same day, the Prosecutor’s Office also petitioned to lift the immunity of another MP from the opposition “Armenia” faction, Artsvik Minasyan. He is accused of helping former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan legalise a mansion on the shores of Lake Sevan.
