Iran’s foreign minister satisfied with progress in nuclear talks with US

27 April 2025 09:38

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that he is satisfied with the progress of negotiations with the United States on resolving the crisis surrounding the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, but feels cautiously optimistic about reaching a future agreement with Washington.

"We are satisfied with the progress of the negotiations; both sides are showing serious intent. I am optimistic, but cautiously so, regarding the achievement of an agreement," he noted in a conversation with journalists following the conclusion of the third round of talks, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Araghchi stated that the dialogue took place in a more serious atmosphere, although some disagreements emerged, and both sides will need to conduct additional consultations at home.

"The third round of negotiations was more serious than the previous ones, and we are gradually delving into technical details," he said. According to Araghchi, there are several disagreements on certain issues, "some of them serious, some not."

He added that IAEA experts might join the next round of dialogue.

"We are now gradually moving beyond general issues and transitioning to specifics. Today we had economic experts present. I believe that at the next meeting, experts from the IAEA will join us," the minister said on Iranian state television.

On April 26, 2025, the United States and Iran made notable progress in nuclear negotiations, with talks held in Muscat, Oman. These discussions, mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, have advanced to technical-level engagements, indicating a more detailed phase in the diplomatic process. Both parties have exchanged written proposals for the first time, focusing on limiting Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for easing U.S. sanctions.

Despite these developments, significant disagreements persist. The U.S. demands a complete halt to Iran's uranium enrichment, insisting that Iran import enriched uranium for civilian use. Conversely, Iran refuses to cease enrichment or surrender its stockpile, considering these as red lines . Additionally, European negotiators have suggested including curbs on Iran’s missile capabilities in a future deal—a proposal Tehran firmly rejects.

The talks have been overshadowed by a deadly explosion at Iran's Shahid Rajaee port during the negotiations, which killed at least eight and injured over 700. The incident, linked to mishandled missile fuel chemicals, is under investigation by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

A follow-up meeting is tentatively scheduled for May 3 in Europe, where both sides aim to build upon the progress made and address the remaining critical issues. While the negotiations have been described as serious and productive, the path to a comprehensive agreement remains challenging.
