Iran’s supreme leader grants amnesty to over 2,000 prisoners
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has approved the pardon, sentence reduction, or commutation of more than 2,000 prisoners, according to an announcement published on his official Telegram channel.
The decision was made on the occasion of Eid al-Ghadir, a major Shiite religious holiday marking the appointment of Ali ibn Abi Talib as the successor to the Prophet Muhammad, Caliber.Az reports.
According to the statement, the amnesty applies to eligible convicts from public and revolutionary courts, the judicial organisation of the armed forces, and state disciplinary tribunals. The measure was carried out following a request submitted by the head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, who asked for clemency for approximately 2,000 inmates.
The decree provides for pardons, sentence reductions, or commutations, depending on individual cases and eligibility criteria.
The decision is also noted as the first such amnesty decree issued since Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the role of Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.
