Iran says it has "goodwill but does not trust" US ahead of Islamabad talks
Iran’s top negotiator said the country’s delegation has “goodwill but does not trust” its American counterparts as talks between the two sides are set to begin in Islamabad on April 11.
“We have goodwill, but we do not trust,” Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, told Iranian state media upon arriving at Islamabad airport for the negotiations, CNN reports.
Ghalibaf said that if the United States is “ready for a genuine agreement,” Iran could also be prepared to reach one.
“Unfortunately, our experience of negotiating with the Americans has always ended in failure and violations of commitments,” he added.
Iran’s delegation in Islamabad consists of 71 people, including negotiators, technical experts, media representatives, and security personnel. The delegation is led by Ghalibaf and also includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The U.S. delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump.
