Iranian foreign ministry summons German ambassador
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the German ambassador in Tehran on January 29 following recent statements by German officials regarding Iran and its armed forces.
According to the ministry, German Ambassador Axel Dittmann Wilhelm met with Alireza Yousefi, Iran’s Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General for Western Europe. During the meeting, Iran formally conveyed its objection to what it described as “interventionist” remarks made by German officials, including comments related to Iran’s military institutions, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
The Iranian official emphasised the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran’s national security and counterterrorism efforts, warning that any move to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organisation would, in Iran’s view, violate international law and undermine Iran’s sovereignty. He said such a step would prompt a response from Tehran.
The German ambassador stated that he would relay Iran’s concerns to authorities in Berlin.
The diplomatic exchange follows remarks made on January 28 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz who reiterated Germany’s support for maintaining pressure on the Iranian government.
