Iraq deploys additional troops along desert borders

Iraqi authorities have deployed additional military units to desert border areas to prevent potential attacks by armed groups against neighbouring countries, Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing Iraqi security sources.

According to the sources, troops have been sent to vulnerable areas where there had previously been no military presence.

The security measures have reportedly prompted armed groups to refrain from carrying out attacks, with the groups interpreting Baghdad’s deployment as a warning that they should disarm.

One Iraqi security source said the country’s borders are fully secured and that there are currently no links between Iraqi forces and Iranian advisers.

Iraqi authorities have also warned the leaders of the armed groups that they are prepared to use all available means to preserve internal stability and prevent external threats to Iraq’s sovereignty.
