Iraqi PM unveils initiative to strengthen government authority
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi has held talks with delegations from the armed groups Asaib Ahl al-Haq and Hashd al-Shaabi, focusing on efforts to strengthen state authority and enhance national security.
According to a statement issued by the prime minister’s office, Al-Zaidi expressed appreciation to representatives of the groups for supporting the government’s policy of reinforcing the role of state institutions. He highlighted the importance of placing weapons under the control of official authorities and ensuring compliance with the supreme command of the armed forces.
The discussions centered on measures aimed at consolidating the state’s authority over security matters and advancing efforts to regulate the possession and use of weapons within a legal framework.
Following the meeting, the parties agreed to establish a joint committee that will, within the next two days, develop mechanisms for implementing the transition toward the state’s exclusive control over arms.
According to the statement, the committee will be tasked with formulating appropriate procedures to end organizational links with Hashd al-Shaabi and ensure that weapons are concentrated solely in the hands of the state, in accordance with Iraq’s Constitution and applicable laws.
