Israeli former defence minister warns about Iran’s largest drills in Syria
Israeli former Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman has reported that Iran is conducting extensive military exercises in Syria.
These drills, described as having an "unprecedentedly complex programme" involve pro-Iranian armed groups practicing military scenarios under the supervision of senior officers from the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Caliber.Az reports citing the Israeli media.
Lieberman stated that these exercises are among the largest conducted with pro-Iranian militants and will continue for several days, not only near the Iraqi border but also in other regions of Syria. The logistics for these operations are supported by convoys traveling from Iran through Iraqi territory.
Since its initial intervention in support of the Assad regime during the Syrian Civil War, Iran has significantly entrenched itself in Syria by strengthening pro-regime forces and actively suppressing the Syrian popular movement. While Iran's military presence is the most visible aspect of its influence, Tehran is also making substantial inroads in the social and political spheres, exploiting sectarian divisions and integrating an increasing number of militias into its network. These comprehensive efforts position Iran as a dominant power in Syria, with its recent activities in eastern Syria highlighting its multi-faceted strategy for expanding influence.
