Italy calls on EU to strengthen border controls amid Ebola outbreak in Africa
Italy has appealed to the leadership of the European Union to strengthen coordination of border controls in response to an outbreak of Ebola fever in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
According to Il farmacista, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent a letter to EU leadership proposing that the issue be included on the agenda of the European Council scheduled for June 18–19, 2026.
The document notes that the epidemiological situation in Central Africa requires “the utmost attention” and coordinated measures at the EU level.
Italy proposes enhancing coordination of border controls through common rules for managing direct and indirect arrivals from affected regions, while preserving national competencies in the field of healthcare.
