Japan remains silent on BRICS call to lift sanctions Reaffirms support for Ukraine
Japanese authorities have chosen not to comment on the recent BRICS summit statement, which included a call to lift unilateral sanctions.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary, Kazuhiko Aoki, emphasized that Japan will continue its restrictive measures against Russia, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
When asked about the BRICS declaration, Aoki stated, “The Japanese government would like to refrain from commenting on the actions of third countries.”
However, he reiterated Japan's stance on the situation in Ukraine, condemning Russia's actions and highlighting the increased importance of a free and open world order based on the rule of law during this “historic turning point.”
Aoki confirmed that Tokyo plans to maintain its strong support for Ukraine and uphold stringent sanctions against Russia.
The 16th BRICS Summit, an event marking Russia's leadership of the association, is currently underway in Kazan from October 22 to 24. BRICS was originally founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining the group in 2011. Starting January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia officially became full members of BRICS.
This Kazan summit is notable as it is the first attended by the new member countries. Following the summit, BRICS member nations adopted the Kazan Declaration, which addresses key topics such as the association's development, positions on global issues, and strategies for resolving regional crises, including those in Ukraine and the Middle East.
