Japan’s ruling coalition feels pressure as government support sinks further

23 July 2026 12:51

Support for Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s cabinet continues to fall, raising concerns within the ruling coalition.

According to a July poll by Jiji Press, the government’s approval rating dropped by 5.3 percentage points to 49%.

A survey by the Mainichi Shimbun showed cabinet support declining to 41%, while the disapproval rate reached 44%, surpassing the number of government supporters for the first time.

Experts attribute the decline in the cabinet’s popularity to disagreements over revisions to the Imperial House Law, as well as criticism of the methods used by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner to push legislation through parliament.
